Etc.... Last weekend, the Velvet Elvis christened its sister club of the same name in Dallas. The new venue features a weekly menu of live rock and blues similar to that offered at the Houston location. The benefit concert held at the Big Easy a few weeks back for ailing Texas Johnny Brown keyboardist Teddy Reynolds raised more than $1,300, which will go toward paying off hospital fees resulting from his recent heart surgery and rehabilitation. A few Thursday shows to consider this week: Tejano hat act Joel Nava teams up with Rhett Akins for a country/Tex Mex pairing at Hullabaloo; Gavin Friday, Dubliners with a serious Roxy Music fixation, come to the Urban Art Bar; Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum bring their folkie flair to McGonigel's Mucky Duck. Friday: Kevin Welch, a Nashville-based singer/songwriter with a discernibly anti-Nashville approach, returns to the Mucky Duck. Saturday: rife with dense harmonies and skewed Elvis Costello-ish lyricism, San Francisco's MK Ultra performs at Rudyard's; Spanish alt-rockers Heroes Del Silencio play the Abyss; and country mainstay Ricky Scaggs will headline a special concert at First Baptist Church. Sunday, catch guitar wizard Joe Satriani in a rare intimate setting at Rockefeller's. Monday, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band try to live down their "Chevy Tough" image at The Summit; the night before, a handful of local acts, including Killing Floor, Mad Oxe and a loose incarnation of Banana Blender Surprise, assemble at Stage 1 to pay tribute to Mr. Silver Bullet's arrival in Houston with a night of Seger covers. Tuesday, Guy Forsyth brings his latest project, the ten-piece string band Asylum Street Spankers, to the Mucky Duck. -- Hobart Rowland
