A Clean, Bic-Lighted Place

Happenings

To non-churchgoing heathens, Billy Blues is opening its doors. From 11 a.m. till 1 a.m., the blues club at 6025 Richmond is holding the special of all specials, which obsessively focuses on the number three. Pay a $3 cover charge, hang out on Billy's patio, drink $3 domestics and hear three different bands. This Sunday, the Tony Vega Band plays at 12:30 p.m., followed by Sandy Hickey and the Soul Providers at 5 p.m. and Fahrenheit at 9 p.m. For details, call (713)266-9294.

After the "Band" part of the Sonnier Brothers Band split, the Church of the Cartoon Heroes was born.

In other news, Club Waxx (1601 Leeland, at Crawford) will begin hosting live bands. According to resident DJ C-Plus, the club wants to "get Harry Sheppard up there with a hip-hop group." In other words, it wants to offer something different from the typical weekend fare. "We want to make Houston a musician's market," he says. Dates are tentative. For details, call (713)655-WAXX.

Finally, blues stalwart Jimmy "T-99" Nelson has been nominated for two W.C. Handy awards, the Big Deals of Blues, for Traditional Blues Album of the Year and Comeback Album of the Year. The nominated album is Rockin' and Shoutin' the Blues. Good luck, Jimmy.
