Depeche Mode

Saturday, July 14, at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, 2005 Lake Robbins Drive

Trying to overcome the stigma of being a piece of retro '80s kitsch, Depeche Mode returns with something for everyone on its new album. Exciter is the band's first U.S. studio release since 1997's Ultra. To appease fans and still make "Music for the Masses," DM mixed both older and newer styles on Exciter, helmed by Mark Bell, the famed synth producer noted for his work with Björk. The result is an admirable blend of electronica and acoustic instruments. DM appears to be trying to captivate the younger generation that reveres MTV's Total Request Live and photogenic pop icons. Conversely, the band is attempting to maintain its faithful following, which has aged but nevertheless keeps Depeche Mode music among its contemporary collection. Nowadays, that is exactly the thing to do to stay afloat.
