Holidays with Slump

Slump moves from "off-off-Broadway" to just "off"

Scuttlebutt Caboose

While the nation's rallying around the victims of September 11 and their surviving family members has been necessary and constructive, it has taken its toll on donations offered to other charities closer to home. The Funk the Holidays show at Fitzgerald's on December 13 aims to fill the coffers of one such worthy local cause with an all-ages show benefiting Child Advocates Inc. Multiple Houston Press Music Award-winner Fondue Monks will play, as will Best New Artist nominee Arthur Yoria. Former Soular Slide vocalist Shawn Pander's new project, the Pander Band, also will perform, along with College Station's Feeding 5000. The show's organizers ask that attendees bring "cool and trendy" clothes or gift certificates for 12- to 17-year-olds…Houston honky-tonker/Southern rocker Davin James is stirring things up at Blanco's and on the north side. On December 6 James will celebrate his birthday at Blanco's by fronting the Bama Band, better known as Hank Williams Jr.'s road band. Later in the month, James and Jesse Dayton will host Blanco's New Year's Eve party, where a 50-buck admission will entitle revelers to a midnight buffet, champagne toast and party favors. Meanwhile, James's intimate Wednesday-night songwriter showcases at Puffabelly's in Old Town Spring have become jam-packed concerts starring the likes of Mary Cutrufello, Brian Burns, Steven Fromholtz and Larry Joe Taylor. James reports that the events are extremely family-friendly, with early showtimes and not a lot of smoking or honky-tonk horseplay. Puffabelly's, incidentally, has an interesting history. The building is an old train station that was transported on two flatbed trucks from Lovelady, Texas, to Spring. It's said to be haunted by the ghost of an unfortunate signalman who was decapitated after falling from its platform in front of an oncoming train.
