Force of Nature

They say a hurricane is one of the strongest forces of nature. But at Floyd's Cajun Kitchen (1200 Durham, 713-864-5600), they're as casual about their house cocktail as a Florida native is about high winds. They don't even bother to use the traditional hurricane glass, opting instead for a plastic cup. Pat O'Brien's this ain't, but don't think for a minute these things aren't packing a punch. Hell, Hurricane Carter would be impressed by how fast this drink could take you down. I was hanging around Floyd's bar one night (imagine that) when I heard a bartender rave about their signature drink like it was a standard formula. But on this Tuesday night, while the Phillies are mowing down the come-from-behind Astros, a drink-slinger named Pedro just seems to be grabbing bottles -- a three-count here, a two-count there, maybe a splash of 151 over there...I don't remember who won the game.

Floyd's Hurricane:
1 1/2 ounces Castilla rum
1 1/2 ounces Bacardi Light
1/2 ounce Bacardi 151
1/4 ounce orange juice
1/4 ounce cranberry juice
1 maraschino cherry

Pour rum and juices over ice in a plastic water glass. Mix lightly with a soda straw, and top off with a cherry. Stop when you forget your middle name.
