Tony Joe White/Mike Barfield

Saturday, July 13

Mention Tony Joe White, and many people think of "Polk Salad Annie," his 1969 hit that later became a signature song for late-period Elvis. Thanks to other covers by the likes of Ray Charles and Tina Turner, White's songs are more widely known than the man himself. But there's more to White than famous tunes like "Rainy Night in Georgia."

Tony Joe is the ultimate blue-eyed bluesman, a unique artist able to coalesce blues, pop and rock into something catchy yet as durably rooted as kudzu. With a voice like bootleg whiskey and a leisurely yet powerful approach, White ventures deep into the R&B swamp. He doesn't get down here often, and this show is bound to be one of those red-letter gigs by a true Southern musical genius.
