The cars seem to never go away. At first I thought it was some kind of opening celebration that went on for weeks and weeks. But apparently, whatever its name, the restaurant-bar that sits at the corner of Waugh and West Gray will always be popular with the locals. The Tavern (1340 West Gray, 713-520-9696) has been both Blue Agave and World Café in just the last year and a half, but Jags, Beemers and Corvettes still fill the parking lot. Stopping by long after midnight, I had to laugh at the familiarity of the joint. A few cosmetic changes here and there, but basically the same bar with the same crowd. The karaoke setup in the main room made the place sound like a carnival. I asked for something special and was handed a Red Headed Slut. No, seriously, the Red Headed Slut was in my glass -- something about Jägermeister and peach schnapps with a little juice and soda thrown in. I'd been sloshing down cold Lone Stars for four hours, so this concoction almost made me gag. The crowd was starting to thin, but an old friend came over to say hello, so I ordered one more. The headache didn't come until morning, but who was I kidding? The Tavern lives on, at least until the owner gets bored with this concept and starts all over again.
