The Marrying Kind

Cahill's Fire Engine Blazin' Bloody Mary

It may not be Four Farthings, but Cahill's on Durham (903 Durham, 713-864-9400) does a hell of a job making transplanted Chicagoans feel at home. Everything about the place shouts Chicago: the red and black fireman's hats hanging behind the bar, the jerseys from the Bulls and Blackhawks -- hell, even the serpentine layout of the joint screams Windy City. In fact, there's more room behind the bar than there is for the paying customers. Two guys on guitar had the PA cranked as they ripped through assorted covers of Stevie Ray, Dave Matthews and the Stones. Then their sassy, tight-jeaned friend appeared and brought the house down with a revved-up, raspy rendition of "Me and Bobby McGee." I asked the bartender to whip up a blazin' Bloody Mary. After a few sips, my cold was gone, the frog in my throat had disappeared, and tears were streaming down my face. Before the night was over I asked three girls to marry me.

Cahill's Fire Engine Blazin' Bloody Mary:

1 3/4 ounces Heaven Hill vodka
Splash of Guinness Stout
2 dashes A-1 steak sauce
5-6 drops Tabasco pepper sauce
3 ounces tomato juice
1/4 ounce Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce
Wedge of lime

In a pint glass filled with ice, mix above ingredients sans lime. Shake well and garnish with wedge.
