More About

Armistead Maupin began publishing his serialized column, Tales of the City, in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1976. Later, the daily installments were pulled together into a book, kind of a collective diary of gay men's lives in pre-AIDS San Francisco. Maupin has gone on to publish seven more volumes, with themes that have changed with the times. The books are so popular it's said that more than one devotee has asked to be buried with a copy of the first one. Tonight, the Gay Men's Chorus gives a full-length concert featuring "Michael's Letters to Mama," a song inspired by Maupin's second book, More Tales of the City. First performed by the Seattle Gay Men's Chorus in 1999, "Letters" borrows its lyrics from an actual letter in More Tales.
