More About

Born in Tunisia and educated in France, Laurent Boccara spent his early years working as a field archeologist in Israel, Europe and the United States. The job, with its painstaking duties of uncovering, charting and reconstructing finds, significantly influenced his later work as a painter. A quiet beauty emanates from the scraped-back layers of pigment in his paintings' backgrounds. Some of the paintings are scattered with interrelating geometric forms, while others have simple yet meticulous networks of lines at their centers. There is a controlled struggle, a diligent calmness in the way Boccara has realized his forms. "Space to be Filled" is a poignant retrospective of works by the artist, who died last February.
