A Change Gonna Come

Calvin Richardson steeps deeper in the neo-soul stew on his second album

And now, for the question everyone will soon be asking him: What's up with the title? His bio claims it refers to the time he finished recording the album's last song, but that's since been proven a myth. It's actually the time his second son -- Souljah, seven months old -- was born.

"He was conceived right at the beginning" of the 2:35 sessions, Richardson unabashedly admits. "And the mother gave birth to him right around the time I was finishing up the album. So I felt that was really significant."

So at the same time his second boy was brought into this world, a new era for Richardson began. The first development in this brave new world is an odd yet fascinating one: This summer his old-school soul will open a string of Nelly shows. And with his second album ready to drop on August 12, Richardson will have another chance to show off his talents.

Soulquake: When Calvin Richardson was a child, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye and Al Green moved him in a strange way. Hear the aftershocks August 12.

As Stone says at the beginning of the album version of "More Than a Woman," "Calvin, yo baby, I believe it's your time." Calvin Richardson will open for Nelly on Friday, July 11, at the Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas Avenue. For more information, call 713-629-3700.
