Third Ward students chronicle the urban landscape

SUN 9/7
Students at Yates Magnet School in the Third Ward used to complain that the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston was a boring place to visit. Then they started to see their own photographs on the gallery walls, and the MFAH became a standard of excellence for young artists in their inner-city neighborhood. Now in its eighth year, "Eye on Third Ward: Yates High School Photography" has become one of the museum's most admired and successful educational initiatives. Teacher Ray Carrington takes his students on a journey through the historic Third Ward neighborhood, encouraging them (and us) to see their world anew through the photographic lens. Many of his former students have gone on to graduate from college photography programs around the country. The exhibit runs from Sunday, September 7, through Monday, December 29. Caroline Wiess Law Building, 1001 Bissonnet. For hours and information, call 713-639-7300 or visit www.mfah.org. $3.50 to $7 (free on Thursdays). -- Keith Plocek
