Cirque du Soul

When you take the family to the circus, you expect to see flying acrobats, roaring lions and lollygagging clowns under the big top. But you can witness an impression of James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, only at UniverSoul Circus, a unique blend of circus, live concert and tent revival. Featuring 13 acts in an intimate one-ring setting, the show has been described as hip-hop under the big top. Wire walkers and lion tamers abound, but there are also some unexpected surprises, including the King Charles Unicycle Troupe, who play basketball on ten-foot-high unicycles.

This circus isn't an exclusive event. In the words of Cedric Walker, president of UniverSoul Circus, "Soul is not a color, it's an experience. We all have soul. Teenage Workshop

Teenagers don't spend nearly enough time thinking about themselves. So Lawndale Art Center, in conjunction with its "Layers of Evidence" exhibition, is hosting a two-day workshop where teenagers will use creative writing and improvisational acting to "forge a stronger sense of empowerment and self-esteem."
