"Barney's Colorful World" brings the whole world to Houston

>By now, most kids have traded in Barney for SpongeBob. But the singing purple dinosaur's still got some fans, and he'll be taking them on a trip around the world at his "Barney's Colorful World" show this weekend. Kids will visit the green rain forests of the Amazon, the frozen arctic, exquisite white beaches and the deep blue sea -- something we're not familiar with in these parts. After the show, Barney lovers can redeem their ticket stubs for 20-minute "Chats with Barney" phone cards at any Toys "R" Us. It's a fair bet that Barney will be thrilled to hear from each and every child who rings him up. "Barney's Colorful World": 7 p.m. Friday October 10; 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 11; 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, October 12. Compaq Center, 10 East Greenway Plaza. For tickets, call 713-629-3700 or visit www.ticketmaster.com. $11.25 to $31.75. -- Travis P. Ritter

SUN 10/12
The Next Hulk Hogan?

Kids like to beat each other up. At the Stage Combat Workshop, they can learn how to slap each other around without the pain -- punching, wrestling and falling in a controlled environment. If this event makes you nervous, consider this: Pro wrestlers earn more than doctors and lawyers. 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, October 12. Main Street Theater, 4617 Montrose. For more information, call 713-524-6706 or visit www.mainstreettheater.com. $75 -- Keith Plocek

SAT 10/11
Fired Up

Watch some real-life heroes play with fire at this weekend's Fire Fest, where firefighters will be battling actual blazes. In addition to the flames, the event features plenty of safety discussions and demonstrations, just to make sure the heroics don't create a new generation of pyromaniacs with delusions of grandeur. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 11. Val Jahnke Training Academy, 8030 Braniff at Hobby Airport. For information, call 713-524-2526 or visit www. houstonfiremuseum.org. Free. -- Keith Plocek
