Holiday Puree

A pinch of this culture, a dash of that make Fiesta Navideña

It finally seems to be sinking in that not everybody celebrates Christmas. Hakeem Olajuwon has done a lot to raise folks' consciousness about Ramadan, at least around here. And sometimes you can catch glimpses of Hanukkah and Kwanza lights among the gift-commercial quick-cuts. Now the Alley Theatre has pushed "puree" on the holiday blender, bringing us the multicultural family holiday celebration Fiesta Navideña.The fiesta features a couple of short plays, including a Dionysus Theatre musical called HanuRamaKwanzaMas, which celebrates the diversity of the December holidays by exploring what they share: lights, family, happiness and (lest we forget) food. The FLY Dance Company will put a Christmas twist on street dance with Jingle FLY. And Richard Reyes and his cadre of young hip-hop musicians and dancers will welcome the season in true low-rider style in Pancho Claus. 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 11, through Saturday, December 13; 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 14. 615 Texas. For information and tickets, call 713-228-8421 or visit www.alleytheatre.org. $8. -- Lisa Simon

Mule It Over

FRI 12/12

The Campfire Christmas at the George Ranch promises to give your family the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of a bygone Texas Christmas. Let's just hope the mule leading your wagon through the park doesn't take the part about authentic smells too seriously. 6:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, December 12 through December 20. George Ranch Historical Park, 10215 FM 762 in Richmond. For reservations and a full schedule, call 281-343-0218 or visit www.george ranch.org. $32 to $38. -- Keith Plocek

Jingle All the Way

SUN 12/14

As all you harried parents know, kids like to make noise. So strap some antlers and bells on your little ones and take 'em on the Jingle Bell Run. Hopefully they'll quiet down after a mile of jangling through downtown. Proceeds benefit the Downtown YMCA. 1 p.m. Sunday, December 14. Sam Houston Park, 1100 Bagby. For information, call 713-758-9295 or visit www.jinglebellrun.org. $20 to $30. -- Keith Plocek
