A Real Mix

Screw everything and go to the Sexxxtravaganza

FRI 7/9

For a group of performers who are all about mixing, the DJ community seems to split into two camps: hip-hop and dance. Building bridges, one beat at a time, promoter Qousey Ben-Musa has set aside plenty of time for both types of spinning at the Sexxxtravaganza Tour. "We've got one of the top hip-hop DJs that's around right now," he says. That man is DJ Rectangle, who's won several DJ battle championships and toured with Warren G. And on the dance front, you've got DJ Mea, who mixes house and breaks -- and then croons original lyrics over the beats with her powerful pipes. That's right: She's a DJ who sings. Backing up this dynamic duo will be spinsters Smokescreen, Daveed and Qousey himself. And that ain't all. Just to make sure the event lives up to its XXX moniker, Ben-Musa has brought Playboy Cybergirl Tiffany Holiday on board. "She's going to be hosting it for about five hours," he says. "She's going to be out and about." There will also be a Sexxxiest Attire Contest, with the winner nabbing $500. Damn, with all this XXX action, we bet the only place in town this week with more unbridled libidos will be the hotel where the ballplayers are staying. 9 p.m. Friday, July 9. Kim Son Ballroom, 1613 St. Emanuel. For tickets, visit www.grooveticket.com. $25 to $30 for individuals; $50 for couples; $60 for VIP. -- Keith Plocek

Baby-sitting my nephew for two days proved to be far more daunting than I'd imagined. Sure, we both had a good time at the comic-book store, and taking him bar-hopping really wasn't as strange as it may sound. But it was his addiction to roller coasters that finally shattered my nerves. Even Superman would have hurled after so many stomach-clenching rides. Back home, I cleaned myself off and changed clothes, and then I took him out to dinner at Jalapeños (2702 Kirby, 713-524-1668) -- not for his sake, but for mine. He sat and read while I downed several house margaritas and wondered why people start families. We inhaled two baskets of chips and salsa before our dinner arrived, and then we proceeded to wolf down our comida like we hadn't eaten in days. He was so engrossed in his comic book that I managed to slip away to the bar to approach some hot-looking women. It was only after I ordered one more drink that I turned around to see him running toward the bathroom with his hand over his mouth. "Excuse me," I said to my new friends. "Uncle Jimmy has a mess to clean up."

1 ounce Herradura Silver tequila
1 ounce Cointreau
2-1/4 ounces fresh-squeezed lime juice
Wedge of lime
Bar salt

Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and pour contents into a salt-rimmed old-fashioned glass. Garnish with lime. Not always the best choice when looking after a seven-year-old. -- J.W. Crooker

Beatnik Off

THU 7/8

Italian-born Marco Dianese has lived and worked here for the past five years as a DJ and multimedia artist. He's also the creator and curator of ContemporaryBeatnik.com, a content-rich Web site that provides a platform for artists, musicians and writers to showcase their work and share ideas. Though the Web site will remain, Dianese's local run comes to an end this month when he takes off for the more crowded shores of New York -- but not before a last blast featuring Pixelvision videography by Atton Paul and musical accompaniment by Chase Hamblin, Two Star Symphony and Zatouchi. 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, July 8. The Proletariat, 903 Richmond. For information, call 713-523-1199. Free. -- Lance Walker

Party On

SAT 7/10

Bartenders sure are friendly until 1:45 a.m. (which, in the temporal vortex of bar time, is actually 2 a.m.). Then comes the tired old line: "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here." And then they tend to get so fussy so quickly. Next time you want to keep on keepin' on, pack up your crew and head over to Habitat for the turntable stylings of DJ Michael DeGrace. This former Hyperia mixmaster will have you and your 24-hour party people bumpin' till the break of dawn. 1 a.m. till sunup. 1415 California. For information, call 713-522-7066. $7. -- Keith Plocek
