Just why in the hell do Houstonians give two bull droppings about the Tennessee Titans? Have they forgotten the day our once-beloved Houston Oilers were drugged and tossed in the trunk of owner Bud Adams's car for a midnight ride to Tennessee? Perhaps they're stuck in some kind of '80s time warp, dreaming of the days when perennial Oiler great Earl Campbell pounded his way down the sidelines, coached by the greatest Bum that Houston ever knew. Or maybe it's because our current team is still finding its collective feet. Scream as we will for the defense, a new passing game or David Carr's new haircut and chiseled rump, this is a 7-9 team, folks; better than last year but not quite playoff material.
Meanwhile, Tennessee has never been the same since they came up a yard short in the dying seconds of the 2000 Super Bowl against St. Louis. Since then, it's been a sad, subtle slip toward "parity," the NFL's PC term for mediocrity. So maybe our fascination comes from a sense of bittersweet loyalty. Or maybe we're just enjoying watching Adams learn the golden rule: Karma is a bitch. The Texans take on the Titans at noon Sunday, November 28. Reliant Stadium, One Reliant Park. Spending a long Thanksgiving weekend with relatives you haven't seen all year can be surreal enough. At the annual Uptown Turkey Trot, families actually get up at the crack of dawn and, of all things, run. "We get a lot of families who're down here visiting who run in the race together," says Joanie Wentz of Sheltering Arms, the race's beneficiary. If you and yours are up for burning a perfectly good Thanksgiving morning, then head to Southern National Bank (1101 Post Oak Boulevard) and register for the 10K/5K family fun run. But be on time, turkey: Wentz expects around 6,000 people -- hard-core runners training for upcoming marathons, lots of families and folks looking to jump-start their metabolism -- to show up. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, November 25. 1101 Post Oak Boulevard. For information and registration, visit www.shelteringarms.org or www.signmeupsports.com. $25. -- Steven Devadanam
