Sports greats show off their signature moves

FRI 1/21

So you'd assembled the cards of the entire '76 Reds team (even Don Gullet!) and then your dog, Griffey Sr., went and chewed up Joe Morgan. Not to worry. Morgan, along with three other members of the "Big Red Machine," will be present at the 19th annual Tristar Collectors Show, where exhibitors will pack the George R. Brown Convention Center with banners, cards, balls, dolls and everything else your wife or girlfriend does not want in her house (read: Terrible Towels, Rally Monkeys, Homer Hankies and Thunder Stix). We suggest you drop the kids off at the Yu-Gi-Oh Tournament and make your way toward the autograph tables, because this ain't a gathering of third-string quarterbacks and oft-injured relief pitchers. Joe Montana will connect again with Dwight Clark and Pete Rose, and Dennis Rodman will advise on how to get a book contract despite being a complete asshole. UT football stars Cedric Benson and Derrick Johnson will indulge Longhorns fans with autographs before they get drafted and jack up their appearance fees. Other athletes appearing include Earl Campbell, Brad Lidge, Brandon Backe, Julius Erving, Dick Butkus and Ozzie Smith. 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, January 21; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, January 22; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 23. 1001 Avenida de las Americas. For tickets, call 713-666-9595 or visit www.tristarshows.com. $8 to $9. -– Julia Ramey

SAT 1/22

It's the Rodney Dangerfield of holidays -- it gets no respect. But Arbor Day celebrates something that literally none of us could live without (and no, we're not talking about Cadbury chocolate Easter eggs). At Harris County Precinct 3's Arbor Day Tree Plant, a variety of tree seedlings will be planted, and children, neighborhood organizations and Boy and Girl Scout troops will be participating. Parks administration officials promise "muddy, soggy ground," so have that bottle of Shout ready at home for later. Bring your own planting tools and join others in counteracting the outright murder of trees for the sake of more toilet paper and apartment complexes at 9 a.m. Saturday, January 22, at (ironically enough) George Bush Park. Group meets at 16101 Westheimer Parkway. To RSVP, call 281-496-2177. Free. –- Bob Ruggiero
