Tips from a Pro

Houstonian Sam Farha shares some insight

Born in Lebanon, Sam Farha has lived in Houston for the past 20 years and has played poker professionally almost as long. In 2003, he placed second in the main event at the World Series of Poker, taking home $1.3 million. Here he shares a few tips:

• Don't let your emotions get in the way, especially if you're losing.

• When you go all in, you take the skill out of the game and are relying only on luck.

• Not all hands can be played the same. For example, certain hands work only in a game that is short-handed. These hands will not work in a full game because you have a lot more cards out.

• In a cash game, you can make mistakes, but it's going to cost you.

• In a tournament, there is no room for mistakes. Don't gamble until the end. The main thing is to be patient and endure.

• Remember: As long as you have a chip and a chair, you still have a chance.

• If your opponent is taking lots of risks and bluffing, then you might be playing Sam Farha. -- Keith Plocek
