Mullet Over

Roll over to the Rolling Thunder Monster Truck Challenge

Trim that mullet and grab the kids and the missus, 'cuz it's time fer the Rolling Thunder Monster Truck Challenge. This Friday, Friday, Friday and Saturday, Satur...well, you get the idea, you can thrill to the sight of the supersize vehicles that crush stuff at the Fairpark Coliseum in Beaumont. See world-famous monster trucks like Bear Foot, Born 2 Be Wild, El Bandito and Awesome Kong (sponsored by Cialis!). The yung'uns can check out freestyle motocross bike riders from the X-Games and Gravity Games. And if you score VIP tickets for your rugrats, they get to a chance to meet Spider-Man (note: not Tobey Maguire) in person. And since it ain't no monster truck rally without mud, the infield section of the coliseum will be drenched in dirt and water for the mud racers. For the uninitiated, these are big pickup trucks with way bigger wheels, which peel out for your pleasure. For those nearest to the action, it's like being at SeaWorld and getting splashed by the whales -- only this is a lot filthier than orca-piss water. Enjoy the madness, mayhem and big-ass trucks at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12. 2600 Gulf Street. For tickets and information, call 409-833-7747 or visit www.ticketmaster.com. $10.50 to $20. –- Greg Barr

Unless you're seriously effed up, you won't find the Cross Court Volleyball Classic nearly as sexy as, say, Gabrielle Reece playing a beach match. But the six-foot-three Reece got her start at tourneys like these. This weekend, teams of girls age ten to 18 from all over the state and country will spike it on 36 courts at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Many of these young ladies go on to play at the collegiate or even Olympic level. "People will be surprised at the athleticism and the size of the kids," says Ann Inlow of Houston Junior Volleyball, the event's organizer. "I saw a 12-year-old who's over six feet tall." Heads up, Gabby. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 12, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 13. 1001 Avenida de las Americas. For information, call 281-488-6271 or visit www.houstonjuniors.com.
