The females of New York electro-booty duo Avenue D are fans of 2 Live Crew, the group responsible for the ever-classic anthem "We Want Some Pussy." So it's little surprise that their music is full of horny energy. Daphne and Debbie, the two hot-to-trot ladies who make up Avenue D, have been workin' it since 2001, when NYC became electro's main breeding ground. The ladies, who have a penchant for deejaying parties in their skivvies, have released two CDs, with songs like "Donkey Punch," "Stick It In!" and "Orgasmatron." They also toured the globe with electro icon Peaches. Oh, and they recently worked with everyone's favorite Karma Chameleon, Boy George.
"He's really fun to work with and very creative," says Debbie. "We wrote a reggae song -- or I should say 're-gay,' in response to all those antigay reggae songs about throwing gay people in a big fire and killing them."
Plans for a new CD and more collaboration with George are in the works. But currently Avenue D is sexin' up dance floors around the country with their hot 'n' horny spectacle, which, according to Debbie, "makes NYC and people in Miami go wild." So how should newbies shake it with these sexed-up ladies? Do it Avenue D-style: strip and dance. The ladies take the stage at 11 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. 1415 Bar and Grille, 1415 California, 713-522-7066, www.1415barandgrille.com. $5 to $7. -- Travis Ritter
The Hard Rock Cafe's Rider on the Storm
It had been a grueling night at work, and I could hardly wait for my buddy to pick me up and take me out for a drink. His cousin was in town from Greece, and they'd been on a bender for nearly a week. I jumped into the backseat of his daddy's Cadillac, and in no time we were sipping cocktails at the Hard Rock Cafe (502 Texas, 713-227-1392). They both had the giggles when they returned with a drink called Rider on the Storm, and kept giving each other titty twisters. It was salsa night at the Hard Rock, and DJ Kool-Aid was keeping everyone in the groove. There was plenty of eye candy all around, but I wasn't in the mood. I was having more fun hangin' with my boys. George's cousin wouldn't stop laughing, and I wished aloud that I could say something in Greek other than gamoto mevgales toh zoomee! Both of them nearly spit out their drinks at the same time. Apparently, I'd just stated that they "took the juice out of me."
1 ounce Absolut Citron vodka
3/4 ounce DeKuyper Peachtree schnapps
3/4 ounce DeKuyper crème de banana
1/2 ounce orange juice
1/2 ounce pineapple juice
Splash of cranberry juice
Measure out ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Give it a good shake to marry the liqueurs and juices. Pour into a festive glass and serve on the rocks. -- J.W. Crooker
We Like Mike
There are at least 113 karaoke nights in the naked city (if you don't believe us, check our online club listings), but there's only one Proletariat Karaoke Night. With a vibe more supportive than competitive, the event offers everyone an equal chance to warble without being shamed out of the room by golden-throated mike bullies. The selections skew away from Top 40 and country, and toward '80s rock (think Pat Benatar) and hip-hop (think Eminem). So break out that version of "Sweet Child of Mine" you've been nursing in the shower since 1989. C'mon, you know you've got the goods. Grab the mike at 9 p.m. Fridays. 903 Richmond. For information, call 713-523-1199 or visit www.theproletariathouston.com. Free. -- Scott Faingold
Funny how everyone goes nuts about spring. Yeah, yeah, the weather's nice, and all the fashionistas get to strut around in their various shades of pastels. But we're still trying to get over that damned "spring forward" time change. Now, late risers and fans of all things purple can celebrate at "Lavender," an after-hours party that celebrates spring and, well, lavender. (Oh, like you've never thrown a party for a color.) Show up at Escobar in various shades of purple and you'll be whisked past the velvet ropes. Then, grind it to NYC DJ Joe D'Espinosa, who'll be laying down some late-night beats. Doors open at 3:30 a.m. in the wee hours of Sunday, May 1. 2905 Travis. For tickets and information, visit www.spoiledboyz.net. $15. -- Steven Devadanam
