It's time again for the Komen Houston Race for the Cure, the largest road race in Houston, which raises money for breast cancer education, screening, research and treatment. This year's race was relocated because of hurricane relief efforts, but that hasn't stopped volunteers from raising a record amount of pledge money. "The people in the city of Houston are just incredibly generous people," says Dorothy Paterson, race chair and a seven-year cancer survivor. "I know they've been out there cleaning out their closets and donating all their clothing to evacuees and making donations to the Red Cross. While this is going on, they've been coming through with support for us." Unfortunately, breast cancer hits close to home for lots of families; the hundreds of women wearing pink T-shirts at the race prove as much. But whether or not you've been personally touched, don that pink ribbon and race for the cure. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, October 1. Bagby near Clay. The Life Aquatic

Seafaring has plenty of iconic characters: the Gorton's Fisherman, Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, the Sea Captain from The Simpsons, Cap'n Crunch and even the sailor from the Village People. Yes, the life aquatic is an honored one, and if you'd like your son or daughter to join this illustrious tradition, sign 'em up for Elissa's Youth Seamanship Program. Your young sea-rats will learn how to tell port from starboard while they shiver their timbers working with a real-life crew aboard one of Texas's oldest nautical gems. With any luck, they'll even perfect their "Arrrr!" (And hey, considering recent weather situations, we could all stand to learn how to live on a boat.)
