Those who say metal is all screaming and no melody clearly have never heard Children of Bodom, the Finnish five-piece that just released its fifth full-length album, Are You Dead Yet?, on Spinefarm Records. The follow-up to 2003's Hate Crew Deathroll is full of guitar sweeps, killer keys and growling vocals -- all played at breakneck speed, like you'd expect. But in typical Children of Bodom fashion, the band sets itself apart from Swedish metal groups like In Flames by upping the use of keyboards. However, guitars soaring in the forefront has always been the band's signature sound, so fans of Hate Crew Deathroll may be surprised to hear the thunderous drums on Are You Dead Yet?. Of course, Children of Bodom still has plenty of guitar solos, with frenzied fretboard finger work by Roope Latvala -- his sweeps are nothing short of impressive.
