Houstonians may recognize John DeMers as the Houston Chronicle's onetime food editor, or as the current host of the radio program Delicious Mischief. But the veteran foodie wants you to know him as a playwright: His debut musical, Deep in the Heart, will premiere at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts this week. DeMers penned the script and many of the show's 20 pop, rock and country songs. The story follows David Blake, who loses his dad and his dream job when he turns 50 but gets lucky when he meets 34-year-old Julie Palmer. "Bringing this show to the stage is basically all my jobs rolled into one," says DeMers. "And it's way more fun and scarier than any of them." 8 p.m. today. Show runs through Monday, January 16. 800 Bagby. For tickets and showtimes, call 713-315-2525 or visit www.thehobbycenter.org. $25 to $35.
