New Heights

We can remember when poppy Astra Heightswas considered merely an upper-echelon local band that would probably never make it past opening for a B-list visiting act at Numbers. But recently they surprised everyone (except themselves, presumably) when they moved to L.A. and got signed by Universal Records. What's more, they've moved back home, rather than predictably holing up in some SoCal duplex. You can see the band — Mark, James and Joshua Morales — today at a KPFT backyard concert. The brothers Morales will be joined by Austin folkstress Suzanna Choffel, who recently turned heads when she won the annual John Lennon Songwriting Contest. The event raises funds for KPFT's Summer Youth Program, and it's your chance to chat up the Astra boys before they get all rich and famous. 2 p.m. in the KPFT backyard, 419 Lovett. For information, call 713-526-4000 or visit www.kpft.org. $10.
