Schlepp to the Cinema

If spring allergies are leaving you farklempt and kvetching about nothing to do, head indoors to a cool, dark spot for some quality Jewish cinema. The second annual Jewish Film Festival showcases 14 films from around the world, including several making their Houston debuts. Today you can catch a screening of A Cantor's Tale, about chazzanut — Jewish liturgical music — and the streetwise kid who became its ambassador (1 p.m. today, Jewish Community Center of Houston, 5601 South Braeswood). Another standout is The Syrian Bride, which features Mona, whose wedding day may be the saddest in her life because crossing the border to Syria may mean she can never return to her family in Israel (7:15 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet).
