Hey, Is Carlos Coming?

When Nuestra Palabra proposed the first Edward James Olmos Latino Book and Family Festival four years ago, people said there was no audience for it. The organization held it anyway, and today the huge two-day festival has its five theme "villages" dedicated to education, health, children, culture and, of course, books. Headliners for this year's event are best-selling author Laura Esquivel, who talks about her latest novel, La Malinche, at 2 p.m. today, and activist and author Deborah Santana, who reads from her memoir, Space Between the Stars, at 3 p.m. More readings, health screenings, panels, activities, workshops, food vendors and a world-class collection of Latino literature round out this bilingual family event.
May 6-7, 12-6 p.m.
