Here Comes "Trouble"

Roll up to Everyone's Art Car Parade

Rising gas prices may have curbed Hummer joyrides, but they haven't slowed down the more than 250 entrants motoring in for Art Car Weekend. In fact, Don Schaper's "Double Bubble Bio-Diesel Trouble" is practically impervious to the cost of oil. The converted 1981 VW Rabbit, which gets 50 miles to the grease-powered gallon, will journey from Huntsville, Alabama, to make its debut at this year's festivities. Other wheeled works of art — half of which are new entries for 2006 — will join "Double Bubble" from 15 states, Canada and Mexico.

The weekend kicks off with the Art Car Ball (see page 25). Then, on Friday, May 12, the Main Street Drag brings caravans of cars making their way around the community, from the Texas Medical Center to day cares and community centers.

And of course the big event is today's Everyone's Art Car Parade. Artists and their creations will be causing what the Orange Show calls "Rubberneck, Texas," the world's most colorful roadblock, by lining up for the preparade Tailgate Party from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The parade gets rolling (at a hurricane evacuation-rivaling speed) at 1 p.m. Allen Parkway, between Bagby and Waugh Drive. After the parade, stick around for live music and food at the 3 p.m. after-bash "Traffic Jam!" Sam Houston Park, 1000 Bagby.
Sat., May 13, 1 p.m.
