Royal Treatment

The King of beats holds court

Yeah, Dre, Diddy and Pharrell make it look easy. But what's it really like to be a studio producer? If you've ever dreamed of a life in front of the sliders, you should check out today's Red Bull Music Academy. Philly decknician and producer extraordinaire King Britt will host an open, frank "infosession" about studio production, along with local DJ Sean Carnahan. Fans know Britt as the waxman for the hip-hop/scat jazz quartet Digable Planets back in the early ´90s. Since then, Britt has produced, spun and remixed for acts including Macy Gray (word!), Destiny's Child (nice!) and Yoko Ono (ehh).

Britt will chat about those experiences, his critically acclaimed album Sister Gertrude Morganand how to make it in the music biz while staying independent. Then there'll be a Q&A session, followed by a screening of The Making of Sister Gertrude Morgan, the documentary that followed Britt as he traveled to New Orleans and researched Morgan, a cult artist and musician whose hymns and songs Britt remixed. Stick around after the flick, as Britt will hold down a kingly DJ set. Infosession and screening starts at 8 p.m.; party starts at 10 p.m.
Thu., May 18, 10 p.m.
