Pacific in the Gulf

Though the word "dame" left us long ago for vocabulary Neverland, the show that sang it the loudest is still alive and well — and living in Houston. South Pacific, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical-turned-movie-turned-TV-special-turned…well, everything but a rap video, finds another life tonight through the Masquerade Theatre. The show, which has starred Mitzi Gaynor, Glenn Close, Alec Baldwin and Reba McEntire in one reincarnation or another, tells a tale of interracial love and tension on a tropical island during World War II. Complete with sailors, nurses and the exotic islanders who entice them, it's no wonder the show has lasted so long. Plus, songs like "There Is Nothing Like a Dame" and "Some Enchanted Evening" are likely to stick in your head until Snoop Dogg finally decides to release that remix.
