Rub-a-Dub

Ah, New York City: The bars and clubs stay open two hours later than our rather lame 2 a.m. cutoff, and the record shops teem with rare musical gems. The Rub, who mix Southern rap, rock and grime, and throw in a little electro, reggae, hip-hop and soul, come to Route 66 today. They were once considered one of the best-kept party-rocking secrets of NYC. But that all changed when the waxmen put their head-turning live mixes and unpredictable mash-ups onto disc, creating a surge of highly praised mixtapes, including Hip House and It's the Motherfucking Remix. Then there was Houston for Dummies, a scholarly mix of the best H-town rap songs past and present compiled by Mississippi-born Ayres and Texas-raised JD, which got some love from The New York Times.

If you're looking for the party of the week, be sure to check out these guys, who've been named one of URBmagazine's "Next100." They'll be throwing it down alongside our region's dance party kings: Austin's DJ Mel, JD and Houston's own Ceeplus & the House of Bad Knives. Feel the rubbing at 9 p.m.
Sat., May 27, 9 p.m.
