Bobotie, which came to the Cape of Good Hope via the Malay slaves, is the closest thing to a South African national dish. And Leibman's Wine & Fine Foods(14529 Memorial, 281-493-3663) is the only place in Houston that offers it ($7.99 per pound). Sort of like shepherd's pie with an attitude, bobotie traditionally contains finely ground lamb, though this version is made with beef, to appeal to a wider audience. It's at once spicy and sweet; the spiciness comes from curry powder, and the sweetness from raisins, sultanas, apples and a lemon custard topping.
