You can't help but feel the urge to pounce on the 24-year-old Rjyan Kidwell, a.k.a. Cex. He has the looks (blond, tall and slim) to fix your stare, the beats to bait your feet and the music to titillate your ears, with a mix of hard-edged street raps and sensitively melodic verses. No wonder he's a pro -- dude has been around.
Cex's sound has evolved significantly since he was a teen in Maryland in the mid-'90s, playing around on his guitar and computer. His early albums were mostly instrumental, brimming with glitchy electronic beats. By the time he was of legal drinking age, he was a well-established solo artist in the IDM world. Soon thereafter, when he started adding emotive lyrics to his music, he broke into the indie world.
Cex is now a full-fledged group, and today Kidwell and his bandmates will drop by Rudyard's to promote the recently released Actual Fucking. The groove-based songs weave live breaks, acid jazz, electronica, disco-punk and Brit-pop. It's safe to say they'll make you dance all the way to the bedroom. Love of Everything and the Wiggins open at 10 p.m.
