Ready, Break!

The beats are back at the MFAH

Remember jamming yourself into the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston this past winter and being engulfed by good music, legendary art and thousands of Houston's hottest partygoers? Things get sizzling again, summer-style, with today's Starbucks Mixed Media Music Series. On view: lots of people showing skin (it's June!), the art exhibit "Gee's Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt" (picnic, anyone?) and the headlining band, L.A. funk act Breakestra (funk is way summer).

Breakestra's dreadlocked, soul-shoutin' front man, Mixmaster Wolf, and bassist-cellist Miles Tackett have been the life and breath of the group for nearly a decade. They started out as a house funk band for the L.A. club the Breaks, covering the legends of funk and soul. Since then, they've put out some original funky music; their album Hit the Floor is so phat and authentic, you'd think it was 35 years old. The eight-piece band will complement some of Houston's most diverse DJs and sound purveyors, including Zin, Manuel Mambo a.k.a. Joe B, Ceeplus & the House of Bad Knives and DJ Samp. They'll set things off at 8 p.m.
Sat., June 10, 8 p.m.
