Grad school lesson one: It's not all it's cracked up to be. Lesson two: It costs 40 grand to figure that out. These were the findings of Houston artists Jason Villegas and Jason Kunke after their first year at the notable Rutgers and CalArts, respectively. However, the two embraced the freedom of relative anonymity that grad school offered, and are back in Houston for "What I Learned My First Year in Grad School." The show exhibits each artist's own evolution, and their struggles with authority that threatened to crush their creative vices. (Sounds intense.) Watch for Kunke's two-word poems "Orthodontic Dreadlocks" and "Blasted Alligators," which are basically penciled messages on spiral notebooks. Villegas offers JV Wallpaper, a mural adorned with his trademark reversed Louis Vuitton logo paired with a series of drawings of chubby naked men. And there's his Celestial Situations, a video installment featuring cosmic scenes and an obese man watching TV. Opening reception runs 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Fri., June 30, 7-9 p.m.; July 3-21
