We have plenty of baseball heroes in town: Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte. And then there's J.C. Hartman. If you're not familiar with Hartman, it's because he played during a less glamorous era of pro sports: segregated leagues. Hartman was a shortstop for the Inkster Colored Panthers and the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro League. Later he became the first African-American to play for the Colt .45s (now our beloved Astros). Sports wasn't the only color barrier Hartman broke. He was also HPD's first black sergeant. He'll share stories about the baseball legends he's played with and more when he signs his book, J.C. Hartman Fields His Way Through the Negro League, Major League and Law Enforcement, today.
