Whale of a Tale

Björk stars in epic head-scratcher of a film

Long noted for her experimental music, Björk is becoming an experimental film star as well. Six years after starring in Dancer in the Dark, the enigmatic Icelandic songstress collaborated with visual artist boyfriend Matthew Barney in Drawing Restraint 9. But don't expect to see her as the next Bond girl. Drawing Restraint is totally Björk: a two-hour non-verbal opus -- save the dialogue in a short tea ceremony scene -- following two guests, played by Björk and Barney, aboard a Japanese whaling ship.

And the details just get weirder from there. Throughout the film, we see the guests cut off each others' feet, a huge, shifting Vaseline "field" and two whales peacefully swimming to Antarctica. With a soundtrack consisting entirely of Björk songs (remember, almost no dialogue), Drawing Restraint 9 is strictly BYOI: Bring your own interpretation.
