Cosmopolitan

The bar at Truluck's (5350 Westheimer, 713-783-7270) is the place to go for a Casablanca-esque sort of experience. It's smoky, laid-back and filled with old money and jazz. On a recent visit, I happened to sit down next to a couple who appeared to be on their first date. The girl was telling a story about how she befriended a bobcat, and the guy was overreacting to everything she said. He could be nervous, I thought, or maybe he was just a douche. Probably the latter. I struck up a conversation with the bartender, whose name was Houston. He told me that the key to any martini, or any drink served in a martini glass, is the amount of shake. When you do it right, there's a layer of perfection that sits on top waiting for that first sip. As we were talking, I overheard Douche and Ms. Douche begin to go through some sort of "No, you're way hotter than I am!" courtship dance. The girl told the guy, "Your features are fabulous!" In Gallerian, this means, "Yes sir, I'm going to sleep with you!" A few quiet minutes went by, and then, all of a sudden, they started making out in the middle of the bar. We're talking full-on tonsil hockey. The entire place instantly got that uncomfortable third-wheel look on its collective face, and the distinguished snootiness of Truluck's went down a notch. I smiled to myself, knowing the whole place was sitting there thinking, "That douche is about to get laid!"

3/4 ounce triple sec
1/2 ounce cranberry juice
Lemon

Combine Smirnoff Citrus vodka, triple sec, and cranberry juice in shaker. Shake vigorously, and pour into chilled martini glass. Remember: Your features are fabulous.
