Gathering Place

Artist Kiki Smith has had her hands in just about everything. Although she favors sculpting the human body in papier-mâché because she likes "that quality of fragility," she has worked in bronze and concrete -- just to dismiss critics who'd call her work "weak and girlie." She's also respected for her contributions to printmaking, installations, photography and film. "Kiki Smith: A Gathering, 1980-2005," now on view at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, showcases the diverse talents Smith has revealed during her 25-year career.

Besides more than 100 of Smith's stand-alone pieces, the exhibit also includes the site-specific installation wünderkammer-- cabinet of wonders -- a maze of vases, sculptures and glass-paneled cabinets never before shown as a single work. Catch the work of this shape-shifter from noon to 5 p.m.
