The "problem with no name" was Betty Friedan's phrase for the lack of social and spiritual meaning in the lives of women. She addressed this nameless predicament in her 1963 book The Feminine Mystique, which is often credited with launching the modern women's movement. But 40 years after the start of the coup, women are still trying to grasp the problem with no name. Five of them tackle this conundrum with a 21st-century slant in the exhibit "The Feminine Mystique," opening today at Earth Gallery. "Mystique" gathers the work of Shelley Shanks, Aimi Dunn, Sorange Castillo, Ann Hernandez and Michelle Cook, whose paintings reflect the modern woman in the context of family, career, private self and role in the larger world. It's ladies' night today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
