Rolling in the AislesBy Bob RuggieroPublished on August 10, 2006Though best known for staging stories from the Good Book, Houston's A.D. Players presents a wider range of family-friendly fare. In the musical comedy Smoke on the Mountain, theatergoers are transported to 1938 Appalachia, where the fictional Sanders Family Singers (think of a G-rated version of characters from Robert Earl Keen's musical Family) help fill the pews of a full-on holy-rolling church. The combination of country comedy, bluegrass-pickin' and gospel standards like "I'll Fly Away" and "Church in the Wildwood" may have you testifying from the back row and offering to make a peach cobbler for next Sunday's social. Just leave the snake-handling to the reptile experts.
