Shakespeare in 45 minutes -- that's what Lyndsay Sweeney of Theatre Collide promises with her one-woman show Shakespeare's Women: Gnawing at My Soul. Featured at the 2006 Australia New Zealand Shakespeare Conference, this innovative adaptation combines speeches from tragedies and comedies alike to create an entirely new story. At the center of Sweeney's tale is a homeless ex-actress whose tragic life has rendered her unable to speak in her own words. But her story of suffering surfaces in the form of cobbled-together monologues from female Shakespeare characters.

The show's producer Troy Scheid says Shakespeare's Women "makes us look at Shakespeare's language in a whole new way." And Sweeney picked the right playwright to borrow from. "If you're going to have somebody [else] write your play, it might as well be Shakespeare."
