James Hunter's been tagged with that "blue-eyed soul singer" label, and yeah, that's accurate. It's also much too small a term to describe him. Hunter sounds like a modern-day Sam Cooke (that's not a name we throw around lightly, but Hunter earns the comparison). On his last CD he moved from the easy loping rhythm of "People Gonna Talk" to the fat sounds of the horn-driven "Riot in My Heart." There was a bit of the classic blues with "'Till Your Fool Comes Home" (Hunter even threw in a few James Brown-esque screams just for fun) and the soft, shuffling "I'll Walk Away." The album showed how Hunter smoothly moves from one groove to another, and his live show should be more of the same.
