If Jesus Christ came back and walked among us, what would it take for you to believe it was Him?

Would the moon have to turn red for you to believe? Would you need to hear trumpets? See Him coming down from the clouds? Watch as the devil's head is stuck on a pike?

Would you expect an end to all wars, a global calm, a gigantic traffic wreck caused when all those SUV drivers get sucked up in the Rapture?

What exactly would it take for you to believe it was Him? Would you need a miracle?

What if He made you feel good, told you you were beautiful, removed your sin? Would that be miraculous enough for you, or would He have to defy the laws of physics, turn water to wine, cure a leper, maybe even sink an impossible billiards shot?

If parlor tricks are what you seek, José Luis De Jesús Miranda is not your man.

"They expect Him to come back in the clouds with a lot of angels and glory, but they forget that Paul said He would first come as a thief in the night," says De Jesús, haphazardly slapping around billiard balls in the game room of his brand-new Missouri City home. "When they open their eyes, I'll have the whole world in belief with me."

De Jesús claims he's the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Yep, you read that right. He says he's Him, the Big Man, the Son of God, the King of Kings. And he's not some alcohol-addled homeless guy screaming damnation from a street corner. He's a dapper 60-year-old from Puerto Rico who claims thousands of followers. Along with congregations scattered across the Americas, his ministry, Creciendo en Gracia (Growing in Grace), has a 24-hour cable channel, complete with sermons, news programs and music videos, that reportedly reaches over two million homes.

His message is simple (you know, once you get over the whole "I am Jesus" thing). All sin died with Christ on the cross. Anytime a priest or a preacher calls you a sinner, he's a liar who's trying to steal your money. In fact, other churches should be picketed, which is something his followers have done in Miami and Latin America.

"Believing in Jesus of Nazareth does not make you a Christian," he says. "Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew. He wasn't a Christian; he was a Jewish man...People who put their eyes on Jesus of Nazareth become Jews, and they don't know."

But those in the know are increasing, thanks to large donations and slick public-relations campaigns. Last year Creciendo en Gracia's central office pulled in over $1.4 million and added over 100 churches. You might think all these folks are being conned by a false messiah with lavish tastes, but if that's the case:

It's one happy con.

The history of the world, as told by De Jesús and his followers:

"You were a spirit before the creation of the world, and God said, 'I need you to know the power that I have and the love that I have for you, but you will know that by experiencing the opposite, which is evil,'" explains Axel Poessy, media rep for Creciendo en Gracia. "By creating the Earth, He put you in a body of flesh."

With flesh comes sin, which God made possible by establishing laws. "When someone tells you that you can't do something, that's when you actually want to do it, and that's what activated your flesh, and that's why Adam was told, 'Don't do this,' and that's the first thing he did," she says.

Enter original sin, the yoke that dragged everyone down to the depths of hell. God kept dealing out tough love, eventually offering up tablets to Moses to let us know where we were really going wrong. But then He gave the world His Only Son, Jesus of Nazareth, who was free of sin and ready to die for ours. Which He did. Quite famously.

Most of this might not sound very different from what you'd hear in a Bible study class, but right after the crucifixion is where Creciendo en Gracia takes a detour -- a very sharp detour, if you really think it through.

"Over history, when Adam was created up until the time when Jesus died on the cross, it was the Law of Moses that was applicable to humanity," says Poessy. "And that is what is referred to as circumcision, because it was by works. You had to please God by doing things or abstaining from things...

"But when Jesus died on the cross, He knew that nobody could be perfect by pleasing Him with the flesh. He said it was actually just a shadow of something better that was to be established, something else that was to come...

"So He came here in a body of flesh and by being the perfect man and being crucified on the cross, He took the Law away, and He established the gospel of grace, which is uncircumcision. And uncircumcision is equivalent to grace, and it means that it's no longer by works, but it's rather by faith."

In other words, Christ took all the sin and the Jewish laws with Him. Murder? No longer a sin. Rape? Not a problem. Theft? Not even close.

All that matters is faith.

"What religion has done is, they've taught you otherwise," says Poessy. "They're still teaching you the old law, which actually expired 2,000 years ago."

  6. This man is already telling people who he is and they are not hearing him. He's telling them that he is a thief. What does a thief do? He steals, kills and destroy. Jesus said that he will come AS a thief in the night. That means that He will come when no expects Him to come, just as no one knows when a thief will come and break in their house. But finally in St. Matthew 24:24 it says, "For there shall arise false Christ, and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." If these people are not careful this will be another Jim Jones tragedy.

  10. rather, uh, sudden, don't you think? perhaps he, the "divine being", should try not contradicting himself. here's a suggestion, just a suggestion: DON'T TRY TO CHANGE TRADITION IN A NIGHT! if the "old law" is still around after 2000 years, i'm pretty sure that its become the usual, and therefore the more accepted, and therfore, more established and hareder to change.

    Here's just one example: He contradicts himself in the interview and his own website. He says in the interview that he performs miracles everyday, healing himself and others. On his website, he cites the verse about false teachers doing signs and wonders, and says he does neither, so he's not a false teacher. Well, which is it?

  13. Well anyone who has any biblical knowledge knows that this guy is an AntiChrist. America while fighting terrorism should be knock this guy off. Yea, might sound a little extreme. But when do we start to define what is and what is not extreme? Bush's war tactics and use of the American tax-payer's hard-earned dollars, extreme? Not finding Osama, extreme? This country is so free that we have allowed our morals and beliefs be hindered by freedom. The World Trade Center travesty is a perfect example. We compromised our morals for retalliation on Al-Quaida and not to even mention our freedom to feel safe,(clearing my throat) the Patriot Act. If it takes extreme measures to take our country back from polical and religious figures who are digging a mass grave for all of us, I'm for it. Is what Martin Luther King Jr. did extreme? He did what was right and what he felt was good not only for African Americans but for a country who claims and claimed to be of the Christian faith. I am a Christian, maybe not the best, but I recognize who God is and what he has done for me. It's time for Christians and TRUE believers in Christ to take control. de Jesus has followers who sport tattoos with the number 666 and are attacking chruches and places of christian worship, THAT"S EXTREME and must be stopped by any means neccessary!!

  14. I do not believe this person is the Anti-Christ, he doesnt deserve Biblical mention or historical remembrance. The flesh in me wants to get angry and say horrible things about this man's teachings but i will refrain and live out the example of the true Living God, Jesus Christ, remember, he did not stay dead, HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD 3 DAYS LATER AND IS STILL ALIVE TODAY!!! Mr. De Jesus is obviously a pawn of the true enemy, Satan and we need to pray for him and his mislead followers!!! Jesus died for the sins of us all, even these confused lost souls. And one more thing i would like to point out in the case of Mr. De Jesus, you either believe the Word of God or you don't, you don't get to pick and choose what you want from the Bible, it is not a buffet table where you get to take what you want and leave the rest for somebody with a different taste than yours. You cant preach part of it and expect acceptance of your teaching while disclaiming the validity of the rest of it out of the other side of your mouth. Please take a little time to truly study the word of God!!! You may have a true Messianic experience if you open your ears and heart to the teaching of the true Messiah, Jesus Christ!!!

  23. I've heard of a psychological condition where those affected have a "God complex" and truly believe they have special powers when they don't. I forget what it's called but it appears he may have it. It's a shame that people are giving his "so called ministry" their hard earned money.     Interesting that the author of the article does not mention anything about this guy using the 666 tattooed, or I didn't notice this in his article, because I was too furious, especially after I have just seen the same story on abc at Primetime (Tue 6th mar 2007). Interesting also that the author of the article chose as a title "This Man Thinks He's Jesus H. Christ!" Because I am sure that "this man" does not think at all, not for a second, that he is Jesus Christ, he knows perfectly who he is (shall we call him.. a fraud?! His eyes dark from years of sin and anger, who is he you ask the demon himself.   40. Crazy does not begin to cover this. What I do know is I do agree with De Jesus Miranda on ONE thing (don’t be surprised even insane people occasionally make sense)
    the role that religion plays: just look at how divided the world is today: each religion claiming that theirs is the true word of God like a bunch of school kids fighting over who is the coolest and the baddest...only this is bloodier and the body count just keeps on getting higher. History tends to repeat itself, this has happened so many times throughout history that you would think we'd have learned by now?
    I always wanted to ask this question who gave De Jesus, me, yourselves the right to judge or presume to know what is God's heart or His divine plan?

  42. The world's problems are from religion yes...but from made up religion. Christianity is the one true religion. All others are imposters and they cause the problems in the world today by deceiving the masses into thinking their crap is truth. Terrorists and Islam is the problem not Christianity. Terrorists of Islam are the ones that committing suicide and in the process killing crowds of people at a time. Terrorists are the reason we are fighting a war today and terrorists and evil doers are the reason for all problems. Christianity is not a religion...it is the one way, the one truth, and your only way to eternal salvation. Like it or not everyone finds this truth out eventually. The question is will you find out in life or after death when it is too late! Act now people! Don't conform to the sinning society that we live in. Don't let them tell you Christianity is just another religion and that anti-christs are ok. Don't fall into sin just because it's "politically correct"! Be strong and fight for what is right because if you don't, then no one will.

  46. I know for a fact that he is not Jesus Christ because the Bible tells us that Jesus will not walk among us on this earth because we are all unclean. This earth is also unclean. I think people are very confused about the second coming of Christ. It does not say that Jesus will come to you in plain clothes walking around like you and me. The second coming refers to the rapture. Folks read your Bible and put your faith in God,not man. God Bless You All!!!

The Bible might say that Jesus will come as a thief in the night, but what that means is that He will come as unexpected as a thief at night.   53. Many will come in his name do not believe it if you want to find Jesus look into the eyes of your neighbor and find the Love. We all have a part of him in us for we are all his children. Those who claim to be him are of someone else and their power to fool the simple comes from below! Yes it is what it is and he will eventually come again but it will not be to shake your hand and say well done and good job for the truth has been seen and what eye has not seen nor ear has not heard the saving power of God.
