Despite its status as one of the largest cities in America, Houston has surprisingly few 24-hour establishments whose main trade doesn't involve pornography or "tobacco pipes." Katz's Deli (616 Westheimer, 713-521-3838) is a welcome exception to the rule. And while most of the time I find it jaw-grindingly annoying when a business uses cutesy alliteration in its name or slogan, for some reason "Katz's Never Kloses" strikes me as endearing. Maybe it's part of their charm. Maybe I'm just hungry. Regardless, I find myself at Katz's drinking a 5th Avenue late one night with some friends, discussing how hilarious the SNL "Dick in a Box" skit is and why it makes us re-evaluate Justin Timberlake's status as a tool. Just as I'm about to take my first bite of a much-needed, extremely awesome grilled-cheese sandwich, a lady at the table next to us leans over to me and yells in my ear, "It's not that funny!" Obviously, she's too drunk and/or skanky to have a full appreciation for early '90s R&B video parodies. I begin to debate this point with her when she gets up and runs to the bathroom, presumably to puke or spread more wisdom about things she doesn't find humorous, or maybe both. She must not have gotten what she wanted for Christmas.
