CHUY'S

SILVER ANNIVERSARY MARGARITA

The best way to cure a hangover is to start drinking again. More alcohol, combined with decent Tex-Mex and attractive women, will ease even the worst of morning-after pains. I find myself taking this remedy late on a Saturday morning at Chuy's Restaurant (2706 Westheimer, 713-524-1700), hanging out with two fetching blonds and a striking brunette scholar who's pursuing a double master's in long legs and sass. We crowd together at the bar waiting for a table to open up, and order a round of Silver Anniversary Margaritas, which come in these awesome yet small plastic commemorative cups. If you've lived in Houston longer than a year and you've never been to Chuy's, you should seriously consider moving to Connecticut. Although the original location is in Austin, Chuy's combination of lay Catholicism, Elvis idolatry and low-rider culture epitomizes Houston's industrialized, BMI-be-damned attitude. Regulars know it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to find a parking space here, as the place knows only two levels of business, closed or packed. After about 20 minutes, we finally get a booth. As The Four Tops' "Bernadette" plays in the background, I nurse my liquid aspirin and ponder the menu. Soon my brunette companion is chiding me for taking too long to order. "You drink like a girl," I reply. She shoots back, "So do you." Of course, I down the rest of my margarita and order another round. It appears I'll be working on yet another hangover cure come tomorrow.
