Night School

DVD review

By Ernest Barteldes

Published on May 24, 2007

The DVD Night School documents a 2002 concert by bassist Stanley Clarke at the Musicians Institute, showcasing the talents of the young players from the music school and rocking out with an impressive lineup of industry heavyweights. The guests on this well-structured jam include violinist Karen Briggs, Police drummer Stewart Copeland, percussionist Sheila E, Stevie Wonder and Bela Fleck. Several bass players, from Marcus Miller to Flea, make appearances as well.

There are tons of great moments from the concert footage. Watching and hearing ten bassists onstage for Clarke's signature “School Days” tune is a unique experience. For bassists, this DVD should be ground zero for getting your chops up to par.
