When the Animals Rebel

Screw reading -- Mike Stilkey has a better use for books

Librarians just might revolt at today’s opening of Mike Stilkey’s installation When the Animals Rebel at Rice Gallery. The Los Angeles artist has scrawled a cityscape filled with buildings, people, clouds, anthropomorphic animals and miscellaneous Western-style images across the spines, covers and pages of hundreds -- maybe even thousands -- of books arranged on a 16-by-44-foot wall. The show is the gallery’s fifth annual window-mounted exhibit meant for strolling passersby, a fitting tribute to the easygoing summers of Houston.
Mondays-Saturdays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Starts: June 4. Continues through Aug. 31
