“Japan” at Houston center for Photography

D’Entrone reveals the beauty of the island nation

The contrast of Japan’s beauty and its rigidity has captivated visitors for ages, and “Japan” at the Houston Center for Photography is no exception. On a 2006 trip to Japan, photographer Amelia D’Entrone sought to capture moments that revealed lonely souls trying to connect with a land that is at once ravishing and rigid. The resulting photographs are somber but striking. D’Entrone’s series juxtaposes anonymous individuals with Japan’s rich natural beauty, using pools of light and swells of darkness.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 20. Continues through Aug. 19
