More About

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and the Houston Press are hosting Soular Sessions, a four-part monthly series featuring local DJs playing alongside Electric Relaxation: Digital Good Time (How to Break Your Own Heart), a wall-to-wall installation by Xaviera Simmons. The room is covered in classic soul, funk and jazz album covers, and each DJ will play songs from or inspired by the records that line the walls. The curator of the event and host of KPFT’s Soular Grooves, DJ Sun, kicks things off today spinning everything from ‘70s Soul to Brit Pop to early ‘90s hip-hop. DJ Sun, a.k.a. Andre Sam-Sin, says he was immediately interested in the project after seeing Simmons’s installation. “I’m very inspired by the fact that she goes along looking for [vinyl] records,” Sam-Sin says, adding that both he and Simmons use their art to pay homage to something no longer given enough attention. “I want vinyl culture to continue; I just don’t want it going away,” he says -- and he backs it up by always giving digital-free music performances. “I’m a vinyl DJ. I do not use CDs, I don’t use Mp3s.” Hear his all-wax musing from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Thu., July 19, 7-9 p.m.
